This week, the world kept spinning — but for a moment, it felt like it might tip.
It started with a question from my daughter. We were walking through the grocery store when she spotted a magazine near the checkout. A famous actress, stick-thin and barely dressed, stared out from the cover. “Mom,” she asked, “am I pretty enough to be on a magazine?”
I paused, stunned — not because of the question itself, but because she asked it without any anger, just quiet curiosity. Like it was a simple fact of life to be judged or praised based on how you look. I looked at her freckled face, her strong legs, her fierce kindness — and I wanted to scream. Not at her, of course, but at the noise that tells our daughters — and our sons — that appearance is currency.
The news this week didn’t help. Headlines about celebrities getting “snapped back” after childbirth. Politicians debating women’s rights as if we’re theoretical concepts, not people raising children, running businesses, scraping dried peanut butter off countertops before work. Even the new state curriculum guidelines made waves in our local Facebook group…
