Faith and the Front Porch: When Anger Sits Down with Grace

Last night I sat on the porch a little longer than usual. The sky was soft with that blue just before dusk, and the air had the hush that settles in after a hard week. From my chair, I could hear the muted hum of voices from across the street — neighbors catching up, a dog barking, someone laughing a little too loud.

It’s been that kind of week in Cedar Valley. One of those weeks where tempers fray easier than shoelaces, and where news from beyond our borders finds a way to stir up the dust right here in town.

The story that’s had everyone talking — about protests, flags, and what they mean — landed hard. Folks have opinions. Strong ones. I’ve heard them in the hardware store, at church, in whispered phone calls from old friends.

But here’s what kept circling in my mind as the crickets started their evening song: how do we stay rooted in faith when the winds of disagreement howl loud enough to shake the shutters?
